We all know that kids are an imperfect and often unpleasantly distorted echo of ourselves. My youngest has started echoing a tendency I seem to have of contradicting people. I used to accuse him of being a little contrarian, but now I see he’s just a chip off the old block. Read more

I eat a lot of frozen entrées. I usually look through the cooking directions. Given the amount of money I spent on the entrée, and the amount of effort I’m planning to spend cooking (given that I bought an all-in-one frozen thingie in the first place), the conventional cooking directions seem unnecessary. My friends got me playing WordTwist on Facebook, and I started playing it in “ladder” mode. That’s where you sorta compete against your friends and see if you can get the highest score. Well, one of my friends had a score of 181, which seemed pretty amazing. I’d try and try and get nowhere near it. Of course, I’d frequently only get 12 or 15 words out of 30-odd words. Sometimes I’d have a good round, but it was rare for me to break 100 points in a single round.
Finally I decided I had to cheat and see what the maximum score was. It turns out to be really easy, but I’m not going to reveal it all here and now. Read more

Please stop telling me to “utilize the overhead storage” of the aircraft, or to “utilize” my user name and password.
Unless you can meaningfully distinguish between “utilize” and “use,” you should just say “use.” Personally, I can’t think of a good use of utilize without using something else: underutilize, overutilize, utilization, etc. Read more

Riding home in a taxi tonight reminds me how much I hate them. My driver tonight didn’t notice that I needed to put my bags in the trunk, didn’t unlock my door (I reached through the window), and didn’t even start the meter until I asked him to. His gas light came on during the drive, and I have to pay cash or they give me a hard time. (I’ve blogged about that before)
Just get me home.
